Everything you need to get started

NUCLEUS documentation, credit guidance, and enrollment support for homeschool families and public school parents.

Homeschool families

You're already set up to use NUCLEUS.

If you homeschool independently, you are the school. You issue Carnegie Units on your student's homeschool transcript — and NUCLEUS is built to make that documentation process simple and complete.

No external approval needed. No school administrator to convince. When your student finishes NUCLEUS, BWRx Studio provides everything you need to record the credit properly.

🏫

Enrolled under a church-related or umbrella school?

The guidance above is for families homeschooling independently and keeping their own transcript. If your student is enrolled under a church-related school, co-op umbrella, or other supervising program, that organization — not you alone — may control the official transcript. Check with them on how they'd like the NUCLEUS Carnegie Unit documented before you enroll, the same way public school families confirm with their school first.

What your student earns

1 Carnegie Unit in Nuclear Engineering Technology — documented on an official BWRx Studio transcript.

A Certificate of Completion from BWRx Studio.

An official transcript documenting 11 verified nuclear competencies.

Weekly Carnegie hour log maintained throughout the 15-week course.

How to record the credit

1

Enroll and complete the course

Your student completes all 15 weeks of NUCLEUS through Google Classroom. Weekly Carnegie hour logs are maintained automatically and available to you throughout the course.

2

Receive your BWRx Studio transcript

Upon completion, BWRx Studio issues an official transcript documenting the Carnegie Unit, the 11 verified nuclear competencies, and the final grade. This is your primary credential document.

3

Add to your homeschool transcript

Record 1.0 Carnegie Unit in Nuclear Engineering Technology on your student's homeschool transcript. Reference the BWRx Studio official transcript as supporting documentation. Most homeschool families use a simple spreadsheet or homeschool record-keeping software to maintain their transcript.

4

Use the credential on applications

College applications, military program applications, and scholarship applications can reference both the homeschool transcript and the BWRx Studio official transcript. The Carnegie Unit in Nuclear Engineering Technology is a distinctive credential that stands out on any application.

What is a Carnegie Unit?

The Carnegie Unit is the standard measure of academic credit used by high schools across America. One Carnegie Unit equals approximately 120 hours of instruction in a subject — equivalent to one full year of study in that subject.

NUCLEUS is designed to meet the 120-hour Carnegie Unit standard. Your student's weekly Carnegie hour log documents this throughout the course.

Homeschool families have always issued Carnegie Units as part of maintaining their student's transcript. NUCLEUS provides the official documentation to back it up.

Public school parents

Get school approval before you enroll.

Public school students can absolutely take NUCLEUS — but because your student's school controls their official transcript, you'll need to get written approval from a school administrator or counselor before enrolling.

This is a straightforward process. BWRx Studio provides everything you need to make the case to your school.

📋

Important — get approval first

Do not enroll your student until you have written confirmation from your school that NUCLEUS will be recognized for credit. BWRx Studio cannot guarantee your school will accept the Carnegie Unit after the fact. Get the approval in writing before payment.

Step by step

1

Download the parent approval letter

BWRx Studio has prepared a ready-to-use letter that explains NUCLEUS, the Carnegie Unit standard, and the credentials your student will earn. Fill in your student's name and your school's information — the hard part is already written.

📄 Download Approval Letter Template
2

Contact your school counselor or administrator

Send or deliver the letter to your student's school counselor, assistant principal, or CTE coordinator. These are the most likely decision-makers for external course credit. Ask specifically whether they can recognize an external Carnegie Unit elective in Nuclear Engineering Technology.

3

Request written confirmation

Ask for written confirmation — an email response is fine — before enrolling. This protects both you and your student. The letter template specifically requests written confirmation before enrollment.

4

Enroll and complete the course

Once you have written approval, enroll through bwrx.studio. Your student completes NUCLEUS through Google Classroom over 15 weeks. BWRx Studio provides progress documentation throughout the course.

5

Submit the BWRx Studio transcript to your school

Upon completion, BWRx Studio issues an official transcript documenting the Carnegie Unit and 11 verified nuclear competencies. Submit this to your school counselor to have the credit added to your student's official transcript.

Talking points for the conversation with your school

What to say: "I'd like my student to take an external elective in Nuclear Engineering Technology that earns a Carnegie Unit. The course is instructor-led, 15 weeks, built on federal DOE training materials, and taught by a Licensed Senior Reactor Operator with 40 years of experience at TVA."

If they ask about accreditation: "The Carnegie Unit is issued by the course provider — the same way many online and dual enrollment courses work. BWRx Studio provides full documentation including a course syllabus, Carnegie hour logs, and an official transcript."

If they're unsure: "Randy Steele at BWRx Studio is happy to speak with you directly — randy@bwrx.studio or (423) 903-2190."

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from parents

What grade level is NUCLEUS appropriate for?
NUCLEUS is designed primarily for 11th and 12th grade students who have completed at least one year of high school science — typically biology or chemistry. Strong math skills are helpful. Some advanced 10th graders may be ready. If you're unsure whether your student is ready, email Randy Steele for a brief conversation.
Is NUCLEUS accredited?
NUCLEUS awards a Carnegie Unit — the standard unit of academic credit used by high schools across America. The Carnegie Unit is issued by BWRx Studio as the course provider, the same way many online academies, dual enrollment programs, and independent course providers issue credit. It is a high school elective credit, not a college credit. BWRx Studio provides full documentation including a course syllabus, Carnegie hour logs, and an official transcript.
What if my student is enrolled under an umbrella or church-related school?
If you homeschool independently, you control your transcript and can add the NUCLEUS Carnegie Unit directly. If you're enrolled under a church-related school, co-op umbrella, or other supervising program, that organization may have its own policy on outside coursework — some accept it without question, others want to review it first. Check with them before you enroll, the same way a public school parent would confirm with a counselor. BWRx Studio is happy to speak directly with your umbrella's administrator if that helps: randy@bwrx.studio or (423) 903-2190.
How much time does NUCLEUS require each week?
Students should expect 8 to 10 hours per week — including the weekly live class session, assigned readings from the DOE handbooks, quizzes, lab assignments, and NotebookLM study sessions. The Carnegie Unit standard requires approximately 120 total hours over 15 weeks.
What technology does my student need?
A laptop or desktop computer with a reliable internet connection. Google Classroom is the course platform — most students are already familiar with it. A free Google account is required. No textbook to purchase and no additional software to buy. All course materials are included.
When does Cohort 1 start and how long does it run?
Cohort 1 begins August 10, 2026 and runs 15 weeks through early December 2026. Live class sessions are scheduled based on cohort availability. Enrollment closes when seats are filled — enroll early to secure a spot.
What does my student get when they finish?
Upon successful completion your student receives: a Certificate of Completion from BWRx Studio, an official BWRx Studio transcript documenting 1 Carnegie Unit in Nuclear Engineering Technology, and documentation of 11 verified nuclear competencies. A weekly Carnegie hour log is maintained throughout the course and available to parents at any time.
Where can this credential take my student?
NUCLEUS prepares students for Navy Nuclear Power School candidacy, NRC reactor operator licensing pathways, nuclear engineering programs at colleges and universities, community college nuclear technology programs, DOE contractor entry-level positions, and health physics programs. It's a foundation — not a guarantee — but it's a foundation most students entering these fields don't have.
Is there a refund policy?
Contact Randy Steele directly at randy@bwrx.studio to discuss your situation before enrolling if you have concerns about commitment. Refund requests are handled on a case-by-case basis prior to the course start date.
Can adults take NUCLEUS?
Yes. NUCLEUS is open to working adults and career changers at the same $750 price. Adults transitioning into nuclear from trades, military, engineering, or other backgrounds have found this course directly relevant to their career goals. The same credential applies — a Nuclear Engineering Technology Credit Unit documented on an official BWRx Studio transcript.
How do I contact Randy Steele?
Email randy@bwrx.studio or call (423) 903-2190. Randy responds within 24 hours on school days. For school administrator conversations, Randy is willing to speak directly with your school's counselor or CTE coordinator.
