For the Children's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay. Required reading before the Chattanooga Homeschool Expo on June 25.
I picked it up at McKay's Books in Chattanooga for $4. If you're building a nuclear education program for homeschool families, understanding how they think about curriculum is non-negotiable.
This is the book that shaped a generation of classical homeschoolers. Macaulay introduced Charlotte Mason's philosophy to the modern homeschool movement — the idea that children deserve a rich, living education built on real subjects, real books, and real knowledge. Not worksheets. Not test prep. Real content taught by someone who actually knows it.
Why this matters for NUCLEUS
Homeschool families are the most intentional buyers in education. They're not purchasing a curriculum because a school board approved it. They're purchasing it because they believe in it — because it aligns with how they think children should learn. That's a different conversation than the one most curriculum providers are having.
Charlotte Mason families in particular value rigorous, content-rich instruction from knowledgeable instructors. They value narration over testing, depth over breadth, and authentic expertise over credentialed generalism.
NUCLEUS checks every one of those boxes. DOE Fundamentals Handbooks are about as content-rich as science gets. The course is taught by someone who spent 35 years inside a working nuclear plant — not someone who read about it. The assessments are open-note by design, the same way licensed operators work in the real plant.
Understanding your customer's philosophy before you walk into the room is the difference between a conversation and a sales pitch. This book is that understanding.
